Sarah Mardini

Sarah Mardini

Sarah Mardini is a Syrian-born refugee who gained international attention for her heroic efforts to save the lives of other refugees while she was seeking asylum in Europe.

In 2015, at the age of 19, Mardini and her sister fled Syria and made the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean Sea to Greece in a small, overcrowded boat. During the voyage, the boat's engine failed and the passengers were at risk of drowning. Mardini and her sister, who were both experienced swimmers, jumped into the water and pulled the boat to shore, saving the lives of the other passengers on board.

After arriving in Greece, Mardini and her sister applied for asylum and were granted permission to stay in the country. However, they faced challenges as they tried to rebuild their lives in a new country. Mardini became involved in the refugee community and began volunteering with organizations that provided assistance to refugees.

In 2016, Mardini was arrested and charged with human smuggling after she helped a group of refugees crosses the border from Greece into Serbia. Mardini maintained her innocence and claimed that she was simply trying to help people who were in need. She spent over a year in detention while her case was being heard.

During this time, Mardini received widespread support from human rights organizations and the media. She was eventually released on bail and her case was eventually dismissed. However, the experience left a lasting impact on her and she has continued to speak out about the challenges faced by refugees.

Today, Mardini is a prominent activist and spokesperson for refugees' rights. She has traveled the world giving speeches and participating in conferences and events, sharing her story and advocating for the rights of refugees. Her bravery and determination have inspired many people and she has become a symbol of hope for those who are seeking a better life.
